Women in Migration

On the 25th and 26th of November, 1997, the interesting conference Women in Migration took place in Rome. It was promoted by the C.G.I.E., together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Consul contributed actively through personal experience and presentations.

In order to achieve the goals of the final conference document, the Consul organised meetings and workshops for women migrants in Great Britain and recently completed a thesis (Italian women immigrants to the North of England 1945-1961: Changing perceptions of exclusion and integration) in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Master of Philosophy. The thesis focuses on Italian women immigration to the "North" of England between 1945 and 1961 (first generation) and also ventures into immigration issues related to daughters of Italian mothers (second generation). A contrast is clearly made between the two generations and the study makes for very interesting reading and proposes further research into the local immigration history.

The full text is available at John Moores University Library and details can also be found at the British Library, London.
